In 1931, he married actress Margaret Sullavan, whom he had known through the theater world. Both were young performers working to establish themselves professionally. Their marriage took place as their careers were beginning to take shape, during a time when stage actors frequently moved between productions and cities.

The relationship did not last long. By 1933, the couple divorced after just two years of marriage. Although brief, the marriage connected two rising performers from the same theater circles, both of whom would soon move into film and become well-known figures in Hollywood.
