#19: Roseanne’s Wardrobe Was Deliberately Unflattering
Roseanne Barr fought hard to keep Roseanne Conner from being glamorized. The loose shirts, dated jeans, loud patterns, and intentionally unflattering clothes were a conscious choice, meant to reflect a real working-class woman — not a TV fantasy.
Networks often pushed for a slimmer, more polished look as the show’s success grew. Roseanne refused. She believed upgrading the wardrobe would betray the character and the audience. Keeping Roseanne visually ordinary was part of what made the show feel radical and honest at the time.
