#13: President Harry S. Truman’s Pets Feller and Mike
Harry Truman received a cocker spaniel puppy named Feller as a Christmas gift, though he wasn’t thrilled at first. Newspapers jokingly called the dog the “unwanted pup.” Yet Truman’s earlier dog, Mike, a loyal Irish Setter, spent time with him in the White House and was a trusted companion.

Truman’s feelings about pets sparked public debate, especially over Feller, whom he eventually rehomed. Mike, however, remained at the president’s side and embodied the steadfast loyalty dogs are known for. These stories revealed Truman’s practical approach to animals while still showing how pets added color to his family life.
